Two Fish and Five Loaves

Overwhelmed by the need is the emotion so many of us have when we simply focus upon the needs of this world. This emotion so often leads us to checking out and believing that our gift is too small and will not make a difference, so why even bother. We may also believe that since others have more than us, our little is not needed.

In John 6, the Bible sets the scene of 5,000 hungry people sitting at the feet of Jesus. There was a sense of desperation among the disciples due to the overwhelming need. They wondered what could anyone do; there simply was not enough supply.

But then a little boy appeared with two fish and five loaves and he believed in Jesus when asked to give. The little boy must have been hungry as well, but something he saw in Jesus set him free to entrust what he had in the hands of Jesus. This profound decision by a believing child enabled Jesus to do the miraculous. Jesus took what was given in faith, broke it and blessed it before the Father and it fed the 5,000 and more with the overabundance filling twelve baskets.

It was clear that the boy had focused upon Jesus and not just the overwhelming need. The boy was able to release in faith the little that he had to God who in turn met the need. We must believe that the life and future of that child was wonderfully transformed as he believed, looked beyond the need and enabled a miracle.

So now the choice is ours. Do we remain overwhelmed, checked out, discounting what we have as too little? Or do we in faith as a child choose to look beyond the need, believe in our King Jesus, entrust what little we have to Him who will call down the miraculous power of heaven to build His Kingdom? As we do, we will never be the same. We are transformed into Kingdom builders.
